Axis VFX (Bristol) is seeking an experienced UK based Head of 2D to join us either onsite or remote. 

The Head of 2D is a key position that oversees the scheduling, workflow and overall creative success of the 2D department.This is a leadership role combining creative and managerial duties. The Head of 2D is responsible for leading the team of compositors, ensuring best practices and high quality is maintained across all projects. 

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the quality of all work produced by the Compositing department.

  • Manages Compositing Supervisor workloads 

  • Monitors workload and assignments across the 2D team, balancing the volume of work with artists’ creative strengths. 

  • Ensures that the colour pipeline is set up across all projects to ensure smooth colour workflow. Identifies, refines, and establishes 2D workflow based on the available resources and established software and hardware.

  • Creates Templates for consistent tasks

  • Oversees and establishes the QC process, ensuring that technical specifications and quality standards are met prior to client delivery. 

  • Works closely with the Executive Producer on bidding 2D across all projects

  • Works alongside the Head of Production to plan resources for projects

  • Provides constructive feedback and is a great problem solver to creative solutions

  • Works closely with the Head of 3D, Head of Pipeline and Head of Editorial to ensure smooth production workflow

  • Defines and plans each project from start to finish for the 2D department

  • Is responsible for mentoring and developing 2D artists

  • Acts as an ambassador for Axis VFX and demonstrates the values at all times

  • Creates and manages a collaborative team

  • Proactively anticipate issues with existing workflow, technology and staffing, and present solutions to management with sufficient time for action to be taken

  • Collaborate with 2D pipeline developers on tools and procedures

  • Cultivate a team-oriented approach across the department and company as a whole. Address any interpersonal conflicts promptly and in a collaborative manner

  • In collaboration with HR and studio leadership, participate in hiring, onboarding, training, and performance reviews

  • Prepare and document workflows and best practices, organising them to be readily accessible to staff

 

Essential skills:

  • 10 years of experience in 2D at a Nuke expert level in film and episodic television

  • Minimum 2-years experience as a 2D Supervisor with a proven track record of delivering shows, driving methodology and leading teams of artists.

  • A comprehensive understanding of visual effects pipelines and processes.

  • A critical eye for detail.

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines

  • Demonstrable experience of developing and mentoring compositors of all levels

  • Team building experience with a collaborative leadership style; always working to achieve common goals in terms of delivery and quality.

  • Attention to detail and highly organised

  • Reacts well under pressure, with an ability to remain calm and balanced
