Axis Studios were selected once again to provide VFX for the BBC’s Doctor Who, this time for the flagship Christmas Day episode.

Axis completed more than 120 shots, creating spectacular effects – the team renewed their successful collaboration with the director, Douglas Mackinnon, executive producer, Brian Minchin, producer Nikki Wilson, and writer, Stevan Moffat.

Completed across two locations and led by VFX supervisors Grant Hewlett and Stuart Aitken, the team worked closely with Mackinnon and Wilson to create bold and seamless effects. From alien planets to giant robots and galactic star-liners, Axis Studios produced a broad range of visuals. This included digital matte painting, character animation, fluids and particle animation, with rigid body simulations and compositing using Maya, Houdini and Nuke.
